Noctis Imperium: Nihil

20/12/10  ||  Trauma

Alright, what the shit? Who are these guys?

Fuck the intro, but they always are way too superfluous to really have much of a meaning. Thankfully it is fully skip-able and you don’t get some gay continuity issue with the way the thing was mastered. I will say that of all the drool-worthy moments that may or may not be on this EP, the last 50 seconds or so of the first tune is supremely fucken awesome. SUPREMELY. I mean it, with passion fruit. Congratulations, I like you guys a lot for that little piece if nothing else.

This EP accounts for five original tunes, one cover (“Maze of torment”), and live versions of two tunes, one of them also “Maze of torment”. Fail. I’ll get the live versions out of the way first. They sound really good, like they are taken from the soundboard. They’re not bad songs but I like the new shit presented better. Oh, and did I mention putting “Maze of torment” on for a second time was fail?

I do want to take a few moments to talk about the cover song next. I half expected Morbid Angel to be covered. It’s like they are the heroes for all of Latin and South America with regards to death metal. “Maze of torment” is a fucken great tune in its own right when you forgive my less than glowing praise of the band MA itself. Nuptial Interruptus do not fuck up the tune but they do miss out on a bit of the fire that made the original such a classic. The guitars are very perfected here. Eh, it’s not bad. Doing a metal cover of a metal song doesn’t leave much room to actually make the song better. Now, a cover of “Maze of torment” in the style of Huey Lewis and the News would be a feat, and possibly very entertaining. I doubt anyone would ever pull that off.

These guys craft some seriously good shit that hammers at your testicles like a sledge, with “Descensus ad inferos” taking the cake as the best one on here. The others are decent enough but nothing to write home with such passion that you decide to start your own political party and in the process commit genocide of people that in all reality had nothing to do with why you got so passionate. I can forgive the straight-up cover you guys did since it’s not fail… but never put a cover song twice just to use up space, that is actually kinda despicable. I look forward to any shit coming forward from these guys, even if I’m not exactly excited about this EP as a whole.

Oh, and before I forget. Nick Barker plays drums on this one.
